The History Of The Hahn

The Valley Chemical Fire Company members voted on June 6, 1924 to purchase the 1924 Hahn fire truck for $6000.00. The truck was built in August 1924 in Hamburg, PA for the fire company. It was delivered to Numidia in November of the same year.

The truck was built originally as a chemical fire truck. In 1937, it was returned to Hahn Motor. Co. to be refurbished. At the time, the chemical tanks were replaced with a water tank and pump. The Hahn remained in service at Numidia until 1966. Upon arrival of the new Dodge fire truck in 1966, the Hahn was put into storage. When storage facilities were lost in 1967, the Hahn was sold to Walter Folger and Leonard Chapleski of Ranshaw Auto Wreckers for $300.00. Over the years the Hahn found its way to Georgia. On August 1, 1999, the Hahn was returned to Numidia by Carl Beaver and David Litwhiler, Jr.

On August 14, 1999, after the extensive efforts of Jim Karnes, Paul Allen, Wayne Petro and Carl Beaver, the 1924 Hahn was once again running on its own.

In September 1999, the Hahn was taken to the SUN Area Career and Technology Center in New Berlin, PA where it underwent a total frame off restoration. Many thanks to the following departments for their skilled contributions and hard work.

Collision Repair Technology, under the director of Mr. Roy Klinger, completed the most time-consuming work. The class was responsible for disassembling, sanding, stripping, refinishing and reassembling the Hahn.

Advertising, Art & Design, under the guidance of Mrs. Kim McBride, completed the stenciling and photography.

Cabinet/Wood Technology, led by Mr. James Romig, contributed all of the woodworking: running boards, hose bed rack and rear step.

Diesel & Truck Mechanics, under the direction of Mr. Gary Wentzel, performed miscellaneous engine tuning.

Precision Machining, led by Mr. Terry Anselmo, Manufactured special fasteners that were no longer available on the market.

The students completed the restoration project in late May of 2000.

Special thanks also to Tom Mensch for the wiring harness, Petro's Classic Auto of Catawissa who was always there to help out with last minute emergencies, the Valley Chemical Fire Company for the loan of the bell and the lanterns, and Carl Raker for the thoughtful donation of the original cast aluminum Columbia County Fire Department license plate emblem.

The Hahn will be on display for special events such as parades and carnivals throughout the area.
